“Uno studio in rosso” è il primo romanzo di Arthur Conan Doyle dove incontriamo i famosi personaggi di Sherlock Holmes e John Watson. Scritta in meno di tre settimane, la storia era inizialmente intitolata “una matassa aggrovigliata” (a tangled skein) e, dopo essere stata rifiutata da molti editori, venne finalmente pubblicata nel 1887 nel Beeton’s Christmas Annual. 

RIASSUNTO 

il libro si apre presentando la figura di John Watson, medico dell’esercito Britannico tornato a Londra, dopo una missione in Afghanistan. Alla ricerca di una dimora, a Watson viene presentato Sherlock Holmes, uomo alquanto eccentrico che abita nel famoso appartamento al 221B di Baker Street. Dopo aver scoperto che Holmes si diletta a lavorare come investigatore privato, Watson, non avendo nessun’altra occupazione, si interessa ai suoi casi. Mentre i due conversano, entra un fattorino che consegna un biglietto inviato da Scotland Yard, dove si chiede l’aiuto di Holmes per risolvere un caso. Nel momento in cui Holmes si dirige sulla scena del crimine, Watson decide di accompagnarlo e diventa, così, il suo fedele assistente.

Analizzando il cadavere, Sherlock si rende conto che la vittima è stata probabilmente avvelenata dall'uomo ubriaco che è l’unico testimone della vicenda. Con i metodi deduttivi tipici del protagonista, egli riesce a capire che la parola Rache (in tedesco “vendetta”) trovata accanto al corpo è un messaggio minatorio e fa arrestare il colpevole Jefferson Hope. 

„Nella matassa incolore della vita scorre il filo rosso del delitto, e il nostro compito sta nel dipanarlo, nell'isolarlo, nell'esporne ogni pollice.“

La citazione qui riportata spiega perfettamente il titolo del romanzo, che non ha a che fare con la storia in sé, ma che è collegato al metodo deduttivo di Holmes. Infatti il “filo” indica i vari indizi che un detective deve cogliere e districare, mentre il “rosso del delitto” indica il colore del sangue. 

ETÀ VITTORIANA

La vicenda si sviluppa durante l’epoca vittoriana, un periodo che combacia con il regno della regina Vittoria (1837-1901), e in cui è vissuto lo stesso scrittore. Per questo motivo, il lettore non solo incontra nuovi personaggi, ma ha anche la possibilità di intravedere usi e costumi dell’epoca. Si nota subito che Sherlock Holmes rientra nel canone del gentleman inglese, appartenente alla classe borghese: è abbastanza ricco per non lavorare e togliersi sfizi come andare a cena fuori o assistere a spettacoli teatrali, ma non abbastanza per permettersi di vivere da solo. Inoltre, da buon rappresentante della borghesia, per quanto eccentrico e stravagante, si prende cura della sua immagine e dei suoi vestiti.

“A Study in Scarlet” is Arthur Conan Doyle's first novel in which we meet the famous characters of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Written in less than three weeks, the story was initially entitled “A tangled skein” and, after being rejected by many editors, was finally published in 1887 in Beeton's Christmas Annual. 

SUMMARY 

The book opens by presenting the character of John Watson, a British army doctor who has returned to London after a mission in Afghanistan. Looking for a home, Watson is introduced to Sherlock Holmes, a rather eccentric man who lives in the famous flat at 221B Baker Street. After discovering that Holmes enjoys working as a private detective, Watson, having no other occupation, takes an interest in his cases. As the two speak, a delivery man enters, delivering a note sent by Scotland Yard, asking for Holmes' help in solving a case. As Holmes heads to the crime scene, Watson decides to accompany him and thus becomes his faithful assistant.

Analysing the corpse, Sherlock realises that the victim was probably poisoned by the drunk man who is the only witness. Using the protagonist’s typical deductive method, he manages to discover that the word Rache (German for 'revenge') found next to the body is a threatening message. He then gets the criminal Jefferson Hope arrested.

"There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it. "

The quote perfectly explains the title of the novel, which has nothing to do with the story itself, but is related to Holmes' deductive method. In fact, the 'thread' indicates the various clues that a detective has to collect and untangle, while the 'red of the crime' indicates the colour of blood. 

VICTORIAN AGE

The story takes place during the Victorian age, a period that coincides with the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), and in which the writer himself lived. Therefore, the reader not only meets new characters, but also gets a glimpse of the customs and traditions of the time. It is immediately noticeable that Sherlock Holmes fits into the canon of the English gentleman, belonging to the middle class: he is rich enough not to work and to satisfy his whims such as going out to dinner or going to the theatre, but not rich enough to afford to live alone. Moreover, as a good representative of the middle class, even if he’s eccentric and extravagant, he takes care of his image and his clothes.
