La serie di Arthur Conan Doyle ha ispirato numerosi adattamenti, tra i quali film e serie tv sono i più fortunati. In particolare, nel 2010, è uscita la prima stagione della serie televisiva britannica di grande successo Sherlock, ideata e diretta da Steven Moffat e Mark Gatiss. 

SERIE TV VS. ROMANZO

Ambientata nella Londra contemporanea, questa serie narra le vicende del famoso detective Sherlock Holmes e del suo aiutante John Watson. L'investigatore privato è interpretato dall’attore Benedict Cumberbatch, ed è affiancato da Martin Freeman nei panni di Watson. Secondo il quotidiano The Guardian Cumberbatch «ha la reputazione di interpretare molto bene uomini inusuali e brillanti e il suo Holmes è vanitoso, freddo, permaloso e introverso», e infatti è reputato da molti come la rappresentazione più vicina al personaggio originale.

Come già visto, il titolo originale del romanzo “Uno studio in rosso” non è legato alla storia narrata, ma riassume il mestiere dell’investigatore. Al contrario, il titolo del primo episodio della serie è “Uno studio in rosa”: il collegamento alla fonte è evidente, ma la sostituzione del colore nel titolo introduce un elemento di novità. Infatti, nell’episodio la vittima è una donna vestita interamente di rosa. 

CREAZIONE

Non è la prima volta che i registi Steven Moffat e Mark Gatiss hanno a che fare con l’adattamento di opere vittoriane. Il primo, infatti, ha scritto la sceneggiatura della miniserie televisiva Jekyll, adattamento del celebre romanzo di Robert Louis Stevenson. Mark Gatiss, invece, ha sceneggiato una puntata della famosissima serie televisiva britannica Doctor Who, dedicata a Charles Dickens.

Inoltre, contrariamente alla tradizione vittoriana di utilizzare i cognomi come appellativi, i due registi hanno deciso di dare più importanza al nome. Questa scelta è stata decisiva anche per il titolo della serie, che al contrario del romanzo mantiene solo il nome del protagonista.

RECENSIONE

La cosa che mi ha maggiormente colpito e che è piaciuta anche a Carolina è che la serie da una parte rispetta l’opera di Conan Doyle, ma dall’altra l’attualizza così che possa essere apprezzata anche da un pubblico che non conosce bene i libri. Inoltre, la performance di Cumberbatch permette allo spettatore di scoprire le varie sfumature di Sherlock Holmes, meno evidenti in altri adattamenti: dal suo genio al suo non essere integrato completamente nella società. 

Se non avete ancora visto questa serie, rimediate al più presto! Ricca di colpi di scena ed effetti speciali vi terrà incollati allo schermo ;)

Arthur Conan Doyle's novels have inspired various adaptations, of which films and TV series are the most successful. In particular, in 2010 the first season of the highly successful British TV series Sherlock was written and directed by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. 

TV SERIES VS. NOVEL

Set in contemporary London, this series tells the story of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick John Watson. The private detective is played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and is joined by Martin Freeman as Watson. According to The Guardian, Cumberbatch “has a reputation for playing odd, brilliant men very well, and his Holmes is cold, techie, slightly Aspergerish”, and is in fact considered by many to be the closest representation of the original character.

As we have already seen, the novel's original title 'A Study in Red' is not related to the plot, but sums up the detective's job. On the contrary, the title of the first episode of the series is 'A Study in Pink': the link to the source is obvious, but the substitution of the colour in the title introduces an element of novelty. In fact, in the episode the victim is a woman dressed entirely in pink. 

CREATION

This is not the first time that directors Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have dealt with the adaptation of Victorian works. The former, in fact, wrote the screenplay for the TV miniseries Jekyll, an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel. Mark Gatiss, on the other hand, scripted an episode of the very famous British television series Doctor Who, dedicated to Charles Dickens.

Moreover, in opposition to the Victorian tradition of using surnames as appellative, the two directors decided to give more importance to the first name. This choice was also significant for the title of the series, which in contrast to the novel only retains the name of the protagonist.

REVIEW

The thing that impressed me the most and that also appealed to Carolina is that the series on the one hand respects Conan Doyle's work, but on the other updates it so that it can be appreciated even by an audience that is not familiar with the books. Moreover, Cumberbatch's performance allows the viewer to discover Sherlock Holmes’ various nuances that are less evident in other adaptations: from his genius to his not being fully integrated into society.
